"The original publication of this manual was the realization of a vision shared by many family law advocates. We spent many hours during meetings of the Family Law Task Force and other venues talking about creating an advocacy manual for low-income family law litigants patterned after LEGAL TACTICS: Self-Defense for Tenants in Massachusetts, another joint publication of the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI) and MCLE. It is also from this group that we recruited authors—many of whom volunteered, and others who were "volunteered." They were joined by others dedicated to the effort to update this manual to continue to deliver on its original intent. Collectively, these authors form the front line of many major efforts to ensure that the legal rights of low-income litigants in the Probate and Family Court are not compromised due to poverty and the inability to obtain affordable counsel. They have taken the time to step back, reflect, and write so that you, the reader, may have a guided tour around the pitfalls of family law practice. I thank them all for their selfless contributions and willingness to step forward." - Preface
