The site features over 2,000 curated primary-source documents related to critical people and events in African American history. Our intention is to support a wide range of students, independent researchers and anyone interested in learning more about the foundation of ongoing racial injustice in the U.S. – and the fights against it.

As race and the need for antiracist change became an essential conversation this summer, the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability Project, led by Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, was getting started on their new web portal aimed at organizations and their employees who want to drive effective institutional antiracist transformations. RRAPP provides searchable summaries of research on diversity, racial equity, and antiracist organizational change in a wide variety of settings. The How To Guides are a great starting point for people wanting to begin, intensify, or improve their institutions' antiracist work.

American jurisprudence and law have profoundly shaped, defined, and constrained the lives of Black people for over 400 years. Racial inequality has extremely deep roots in American society, and our Constitution, statutes, court cases, and regulations not only bear witness to this, but are often the source of it. This timeline provides an overview of some of these laws, beginning with the first known case marking the legal difference between Africans and Europeans in 1640 in Virginia, and continuing with laws recently introduced in the wake of the killing of George Floyd and other Black Americans. Ancestry refers to a person’s ethnic origin or descent, "roots," or heritage, or the place of birth of the person or the person’s parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States.

The Census Bureau collects race data according to U.S. Office of Management and Budget guidelines, and these data are based on self-identification. People may choose to report more than one race group. People of any race may be of any ethnic origin.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts reimbursable projects for the Bureau of Justice Statistics and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The Census Bureau collects and provides statistics on topics such as sexual victimization, capital punishment, juvenile residential facilities, characteristics of youth in custody, and criminal justice expenditures.

The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) collects information on victimization characteristics, including race and ethnicity.
