Bloomberg Law (BLaw) is a subscription legal research platform that was introduced to legal markets in 2009. It acquired BNA Law Reports in 2011 and fully integrated them in 2018. The BLaw platform includes a wide variety of legal research tools, including annotated cases and statutes, treatises, practice centers, and news. In legal practice, BLaw is primarily used by Big Law to supplement Lexis or Westlaw and in specialized fields like Tax; there are few reports of it being used as a stand-alone online legal research platform.
Many legal professionals rely on the BNA Law Reports for current awareness. U.S. Law Week and the Circuit Split summaries are popular, as are Bloomberg BNA Portfolios in specific topics, such as tax. BLaw Dockets gives you quick access to everything in PACER, the federal fee-based platform for courts.
Consider signing up for an email newsletter to test drive the product while in law school.
Bloomberg Law is only available to students and faculty at the University of Maine School of Law. Contact the Law Library if you are a Maine Law student who needs to register for Bloomberg Law. The newsletters will require the user to sign on to the Bloomberg Law database before reading the content.
Bloomberg News is an international news agency started about 30 years ago as Bloomberg Business News that now covers legal news as well. Each of the topics has two email newsletters - "news" and "insights". Look for "Subscribe to Newsletter".
